I am thrilled that the dining room that I designed last year for the San Francisco Decorator Showcase was recently featured in the Canadian House & Home- January, 2012).

Daring Dining Room

Statement pieces and a striking palette are tempered by a minimalist sensibility.

Gibson is open and airy and filled with personality That large ultramodern pattern painted on the floors pulls in hits of black and from the floor to ceiling cashmere drapers and ample sideboard, and also serves as the jumping-off point for the room's contemporary vibe, amplifying the abstract art and the striking branch chandelier. To keep the room room from feeling too heavy, natural elements like a mix of wood and earthy grasscloth wallpaper are introduced, while pops of kelly green, Wedgewood blue and pink add colour and freshness. By day, the room is filled with sunlight that streams through the white- trimmed, fanlight- topped window, and, softly lit at night, it transforms into a moody, sophisticated entertaining space.

Wallpaper. I try to use it in every project. We recently hung this beautiful graphic paper in a client's powder room. I just love the colors and scale of the design.

A trip to the flower market this week was filled beautiful orange trees for Chinese New Year. Makes me dream of a garden...

Grant’s guide to buying art

A client emailed me over the weekend to ask about recommended art sources.

It really got me thinking about this and where I like to go for my home. To me, art is a very personal experience. What I might suggest for a client might not precisely coincide with what they would pick for themselves. For larger projects, clients often bring in art consultants that source from galleries around the world. But where would I suggest that clients look for art that isn’t going to break the bank? Where could they casually search on a Sunday afternoon? I decided to make a list (I am a big list maker!) and the list kept getting longer and longer. So I thought I would share my list...

Where do you purchase art for your place? Do you have favorite sources? I would love to hear what you think and if you have any great suggestions.

Holiday decorating

I seem to be talking about color lately.

When you think of this time of year, red and green come to mind.

There is something about seeing all of the decorations up WAY too early every year (I swear I saw some up right after Halloween this year) that makes me want to do the exactly opposite. I do holiday decorating for client’s homes…I see the red and green everywhere I go from the bank to restaurants to every retail store. (Don’t even get me started on the music blaring either!)

I wouldn’t exactly call myself a Grinch, but there is something about all of the commercialism that just ruins the holiday excitement for me.

This year, I decided to do something a bit different and much more me.

Who says you HAVE to use red and green?

It just so happened that The San Francisco Chronicle was interested in the way that I decorated as well. You can check out this story HERE and see how three different designers decorated their spaces for the holidays. Each one is different and unique in its own way.

What do you do to decorate your place?

Here were some of my tips from the article:

For Grant K. Gibson, holiday decor is synonymous with a classic but organic and refined look. Instead of decorating with a traditional tree that takes up space, Gibson prefers to outfit his apartment in Pacific Heights with a tablescape framed by hanging boxwood wreaths, vintage silver ornaments from the Alameda flea market strung with raffia from magnolia branches in urns in varying heights, and stacked boxes wrapped in crisp white paper and tied with simple black ribbons.

"I live in a small apartment and don't have a lot of room for a big tree," says Gibson, who was named one of Elle Decor's "5 up-and-coming designers to watch" earlier this year and whose work has graced the pages of publications including House Beautiful.

"I like to keep the look classical and timeless but with a twist, using a juxtaposition of different textures and layers so it's not so one-dimensional. This is relaxed, approachable, doesn't seem overly commercial, and allows plenty of room for entertaining."

Gift-wrapping tips:

Consider unexpected materials. "I like to use Chinese newspaper from Chinatown and twine for wrapping gifts. It is a very humble and simple way to add interest."

"Use one type of paper to wrap gifts. It ties everything together and makes it consistent. It doesn't look so busy and cluttered."

"I send cards and give gifts after the first of the year. It makes it extra special, and this way it's not jumbled together with all of the other cards and presents."

Traditions:

"We do our holiday celebration on Christmas Eve. I cook for days and always have everyone over to open presents. I like to give mason jars with bing cherries, half a cup of brown sugar and bourbon. I love how the cherries turn the bourbon a deep, dark shade of burgundy. It makes a great drink as is on the rocks, or you can mix it and make a Manhattan with bitters and vermouth.

Orange

I tend to gravitate towards more neural color palettes for my own apartment. I am really not afraid of color at all, and really love using it in my work with clients. But there has always been something about coming home to a space that isn't overall colorful that relaxes me and calms me down. In a way, maybe since I look at colors all day long this is my subconscious way of not bringing my work home with me?

That said, I have been obsessed with Hermes orange for many years. There is something about it that makes me smile. Perhaps it reminds me of renting an apartment for a week in Paris and walking into Hermes and just falling in love with the color.

I had always kept the idea of using the color in the back of my head, but never really sure where to put it.

Until now.
I took the bold move and painted my toilet room orange. (My sink and claw foot tub are in another room.) In complete honesty, I am not ashamed to admit that we color matched the orange and it came out completely the wrong color. So after painting the space the wrong color (a bad "fruit punch" gone wrong), after a few more samples, we got it just right.

Now I feel like I’m living inside an Hermes box when I go into the room. Would I paint my living room orange like this? I am going to bet on that never happening. But with a powder room or space like a closet or foyer- why not have a little fun and go bold!

It just so happens that orange is the Color of 2012 from Pantone.
Trendsetter? I don't think so. Coincidence? Yes.

I know that I am not going to be living in my apartment for many more years. In fact I have some plans in the works for some changes next year.
So why not play around a bit and have some fun for a while? I am sure that I will have to paint it back to white when I move.

Waterworks giveaway!

You know that I enjoy sharing new products when I discover something that I love. I also know that you get VERY EXCITED when I have a great giveaway on the blog. I haven’t had one recently, and I have a feeling that you are going to love this one!

Butternut squash soup

I was talking about Thanksgiving with a client and cooking in general last week when she shared with me one of her favorite recipes for butternut squash soup.

I made this last weekend with a big salad and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Not only is the recipe really easy but it is healthy too.

If you are looking for something to serve for guests coming over this month, I highly suggest it.

Butternut Squash Soup

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 large yellow onions, peeled and roughly chopped (about 3 cups)

2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon garam masala or curry powder

1 large butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and diced

2 pints vegetable stock, warmed

Heat the oil and butter in a soup pot over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and saute for about 10 minutes, or until they begin to soften. Add the salt, pepper, and garam masala and cook for another 2 minutes. Add the squash and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour the stock into the pot - if it doesn't quite cover the squash add some boiling water. Bring to a boil, lower to a simmer and cook until the squash is very tender about 20 minutes.

Let it cool for at least 15 minutes and then puree it in batches in a blender.

Be careful when blending hot liquids. Start slowly and work in batches if necessary. Pour back into the pot, gently heat, season with salt, and serve.

I’m going grey

No, really, I am. We aren’t taking about my hair but rather that I’m having my built in bookcase in my living room painted grey.

I know I mentioned that I was doing some minor changes around my place, and trying to get my place looking good just in time for the holidays.

Sometimes I get so focused on client projects that I feel a bit like the cobbler’s children. I have wanted to paint the bookcase for quite some time, so I was thrilled that my painter has a free day in his schedule to make this happen for me.

Oh, and since I know that you are going to ask- the color is Farrow & Ball’s Railings. It happens to be one of my go-to dark greys.

I can already see how this minor make over is going to change the whole feel of the space. So what do you think so far? I will be sure to share my after photos soon.

This is hands down my new favorite candle. I can't seem to get enough of it. Even when it is not burning, the faint smell in the room makes me smile.

I really love the look of natural woven shades. In fact I have them in every window of my own apartment. They offer such a wonderful texture and layered looked to a space. There are so many beautiful options to choose from. Working on finding just the right one for a great Victorian house project here in San Francisco. It's going to be stunning! (Note: I prefer when possible to install mount roman shades. I think the look is very tailored and clean and allows you to show off any molding detailing that you have.)

This week I was loving the colors (and the flavors) of these multicolored carrots.

(shown on my favorite Astier platter before I roasted them with a little olive oil- salt and pepper at 450 degrees for around 30 minutes)

We designed and installed this great roman shade for a fun kids room that we are working on. A simple white canvas/linen blend with a black grosgrain detail sewn on.

We feel in love with the blue ikat fabric and just had to use it for chairs for a breakfast room project. Every time I see the pattern, I can't help but smile.

Black & White (and a Bit in Between)

It is not everyday that your work gets published, or let alone featured in a book!

The JUST released book, Black & White (and a Bit in Between)
by Celerie Kemble hits the shelves this week showing hundreds of black and white interiors. As you can imagine, I am smitten with the concept of a whole book devoted to black and white.

I am thrilled to have not one but two photos of my work featured in the book. How thrilling to be published next to so many great interior design friends!

Black and white décor is at once dramatic and understated, modern and classic, apparent in the work of iconic designers such as Dorothy Draper and Madeleine Castaing but just as present in design today. And the inspiration is all around us—from nature (a zebra’s stripes, tree trunks rising from drifts of snow) to old Hollywood movies and fashion to black-and-white photography and patterns we encounter in our everyday lives (crossword puzzles and the pages of our favorite novels).

Thank you Celerie (and your fabulous team) for including me in your latest book!

I am pretty sure that this is going to become an instant success and on every wish list.

Black and white

I would call my love of black and white an obsession for sure.

Perhaps I didn't know just how serious the problem was until I was picking up my dry cleaning the other day.

As you can see there are so many different styles and sizes of gingham shirts available. Hence the need for so many.

My dry cleaners' comment: "Mr. Gibson, you really like these kind of shirts". Why, yes, I do.

Casa Kulanu

Sometimes I like to leave the pavement of city living on weekends and just get out of town. There is something really nice about a little day- road trip that can be just so refreshing. One of the amazing things about living in San Francisco is that you can just pop in the car and be outside of the city and enjoying a sunny afternoon just a short distance away.

Driving the windy roads to Calistoga (right next to Napa) and seeing the leaves on all of the vineyards start to change the afternoon light is like magic. Harvest time might be one of my favorite times of the year. It reminded me how autumn - and the changing colors, the foods and the weather - might be my favorite season of all.

Perhaps even more magically was having the pleasure of having lunch with friend Rela Gleason and architect Bobby McAlpine at her stunning house, set on 40-acres (just featured in the latest Architectural Digest, November 2011). Many of the pieces in the home, Casa Kulanu (meaning “all of us” in Hebrew) are from Summer Hill (which Rela is the creative director). Over dinner a few months back, Rela shared with me that she was going to be launching a new collection. These fabrics have just launched and are featured on the Company’s beautiful new website. They are stunning fabrics, and I instantly fell in love with the Fanfare collection. I immediately emailed Rela when I received the “hot of the press” samples and ordered it in two color ways for a client project.

I love seeing how people live and how they use their spaces. I love the relaxed, yet elegant, edited interior that is Casa Kulanu. I had to share some of these photos that I took on my visit. Sometimes you don’t get the feeling of warmth in overall shots as they appear in magazines. I think that you can feel the creativity and seemingly effortless styling in these details. A perfect sunny, Sunday afternoon expedition. Now I just have to figure out a way to be invited back!

Here are a few things that have inspired me this week...

Searching for the perfect greige (not gray and not beige- but the perfect combination of the two) fabric with using my clients Chanel nail polish to find the right color.

Adding a colorful trim to a chair! Love how this orange grosgrain pops and gives the upholstery a fresh and fun look.

I had to jump on the recent Missoni for Target craze and bought a pair of these great and graphic hand towels for my bathroom. What a great way to freshen up a space!

Iris Apfel is a woman who has always been ahead of her time. More than 50 years ago as an interior designer looking for fine traditional silk-woven fabrics, she recognized an opportunity and, along with her husband, Carl, founded Old World Weavers. She built it into one of the most prestigious brands in the world of textiles and interior design and the authority on antique textile reproductions.

Thirteen years ago it was sold to Stark Carpets Co., and the Apfels have remained as consultants. The exquisite workmanship and exclusive fabric designs drew the attention of the most discriminating clients – including Greta Garbo, Marjorie Merriweather Post and Estée Lauder.

Old World Weavers was also awarded many important restoration projects, which included work at the White House, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Flagler Museum in West Palm Beach.

Apfel has been an influential pioneer in the world of fashion as well, boldly linking high- and low-end and melding flea market finds with haute couture long before doing so was considered fashionable. Her richly layered combinations of colors, textures and patterns show her remarkable panache.

"Taste you can learn,” Iris Barrel Apfel pronounces, peering over the black frames of her trademark oversize glasses. “But style is like charisma. You know it when you see it.” Apfel, it must be said, has both qualities—in spades.

This is evident the minute you enter her three-bedroom Manhattan apartment, a Park Avenue aerie she shares with her husband, Carl, that looks a little as if the Collyer brothers had moved in with Madame de Pompadour (as seen in Architectural Digest in June 2011). To the right of the front door, two stone pedestals piled with art books flank a Baroque console topped by a chinoiserie mirror. Eighteenth- and 19th-century dog portraits line a corridor leading to the bedrooms, and in the boiseried living room, an antique carving of a French mountain dog holds a platter brimming with costume jewelry. Everywhere there are exquisite French chairs, painted Genoese chests, antique paisley shawls, New Mexican santos, and much, much more. All of it was acquired, Apfel says, “a piece here, a piece there,” during the many European buying trips she made over the years.

“I don’t do minimal,” Apfel says of her design approach.

She didn’t start out aiming to be an interior designer. In the early 1940s, as a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin’s art school, she hankered for a career in fashion. But after landing her first job as a $15-a-week copy girl at Women’s Wear Daily, she figured out that advancement there was blocked because the editors she hoped to someday replace were, as she puts it, “either too old to get pregnant or too young to die.” A stint working for a well-connected woman who dressed up apartments to make them marketable during the World War II housing doldrums followed. “She couldn’t decorate her way out of a shoebox,” says Apfel, but she had a talent for scavenging from junkyards and flea markets the kinds of furniture and fabrics that were hard to come by in wartime. The thrill of the hunt was contagious, and the conviction that Apfel could outdo her employer was inspiring. “I realized I had found my calling,” she declares. “Interior design was for me.”

If her distinctive fashion sense attracted her first clients when she set up her own design firm after the War’s end (“I guess people thought if I could decorate myself I could decorate a room or two,” she comments), it was her eye for unique furnishings and objects, as well as her facility with color and texture, that brought her instant success. “I don’t do run-of-the-mill stuff,” she says, “and I don’t do minimal.” Apfel doesn’t compromise either: Old World Weavers was born when she was looking for “a fabric that didn’t exist”—an overscale Napoleonic bee on blue silk—and she and her husband ended up going into business with the master weaver she commissioned to produce it. And she follows her passions. On her first buying trip to Florence, she spotted a Velázquez-ish painting of a girl in an opulent brocade gown, very Iris Apfel, her long, fair hair tied with scarlet bows. “I went bananas,” she says. “I fell in love with that child—I loved the ribbons in her hair.” Crushed to discover the picture was sold, she nonetheless returned the next day; finding the shopkeeper absent, she got his assistant to name a price, paid it without a quibble, and scooped up the painting, which now hangs in her apartment. “I’ve never done such a naughty thing,” she observes, but she doesn’t look particularly sorry.

In collaboration with online retailer yoox.com (starting October 24th), she has designed three collections that go on sale this month: ready-to-wear, which includes densely layered tea-stained bone necklaces and hefty amber bracelets, and a more expensive limited edition that features glass stone–encrusted frog pins and rhinestone cuffs the size of car headlights. Additionally, she is selling a selection of pieces pulled from her own collection—among them, bejeweled blackamoor pins and a stunning turquoise snake cuff. Not that Apfel doesn’t adore them anymore. “There comes a point when you need space,” she reasons. “Plus, I could use a few shekels.”

Sprucing it up

A good friend and I were talking over dinner the other night at Spruce in San Francisco about social media and life in general. It’s always great to get caught up with a friend after working all day.

As we sat at our cozy bar-side table, it occurred to me that that sitting there and enjoying the Spruce burger (with fries, of course, and a glass of wine) over good conversation has to be a favorite after work treat. We got to talking about how I am passionate about so many things and how it would be fun to share moments like this with you out there that read this blog.

Testing, testing 123, is anyone out there? Just checking.

So I guess the point of this post is to tell you that, in addition to my regular weekly post, I’m going to start sharing more frequent bits of what really inspires me in my life. This week, I was inspired by a burger, fries and glass of wine. (Thank goodness that this isn’t my inspiration every day, but it really makes for a delightful treat at the end of a long day).

I am excited to share more of these thoughts with you. It might be a fabric that inspires me on a client project or paint color that I just can’t stop thinking about.

I am so lucky to be in a career that I have always dreamed up. Inspiration is around every corner.

This is going to be me just being me. Come back often to see what I am up to.

Oh and sorry if I have you craving a burger right about now.

In case you can’t make it to Spruce and are up for making it at home. Here is the recipe below:

SPRUCE burger

Patties

3 pounds (20 percent fat) ground chuck

Salt and pepper

2 tablespoons grapeseed oil

Divide the hamburger meat into six equal balls. Pat them down so they are around 3/4- inch thick. Season with salt and pepper.

Place a iron skillet over high heat for 10 minutes. Turn the heat down to medium- low, and add the grapeseed oil to the pan and cook the burgers for around three minutes each side (more if you like it more than medium rare).

Buns

2 cups water

1 cup scalded milk

1 tablespoon sugar

2 tablespoons salt

1/2 tablespoon, plus 1/2 teaspoon dry yeast, dissolved in 2 tablespoons warm water

8 cups all purpose flour

1/3 cup melted butter

Grapeseed oil, enough to coat a skillet with a ¼ inch layer of oil

Semolina flour, enough to sprinkle over the buns

Whisk the water, scalded milk, sugar, and salt. Add the dissolved yeast. Thoroughly mix in 4 cups of the flour. Cover and allow to rest for 30 minutes.

Mix in melted butter and the rest of the flour and mix for 5 minutes.

Cover and allow to rest for another 30 minutes.

Place the dough on a floured surface and roll the dough out flat (1/2 inch thick). Cover again for 30 minutes.

Cut out 3 inch rings to form individual bungs. Lightly coat them in the semolina flour and pan-fry over medium heat (cooking each side for about 5 minutes, or golden brown.

Serve the patty over the toasted bun. They serve it at the restaurant with aioli and pickled zucchini and red onions.

The Color Purple

Summer is over. Fall is here and the leaves are starting to change.

Layers of clothing start to come out and things start to feel cozier everywhere you go.

When I think of the color purple, I think of it as a moodier color suiting the transition from summer to fall. If I ever wore color, I’d be inspired to pair a purple cashmere sweater with charcoal tweed slacks. I’d also be inclined to switch out airy throw pillows for autumnal tones, preparing to settle in for the winter.

Perhaps that is what Elle Decor, House Beautiful and Veranda were also thinking this month - as they all featured purple prominently in their respective October issues.

One could think that this was planned, but as it turns out it happened to be a coincidence.

I had the opportunity to ask the editors of each magazine about their inspiration for featuring purple.

Michael Boodro, Editor-in-chief of Elle Decor:

"Purple definitely seems to be the color of the moment, and it’s not going away soon. In fact, we have a dazzling lacquered purple room on our upcoming November cover. What’s great about purple is that it can be formal and majestic or fun and funky, masculine or feminine. And it’s guaranteed to be noticed. So it’s perfect for the newsstand."

Newell Turner, Editor-in-chief of House Beautiful:

“Purple is a happy color. Even in its moodier shades, it makes you feel special. I particularly like it smoky and gray.”  “Maybe the appeal of purple right now has something to do with the faltering economy and a simmering sense of insecurity in the world. Wow, that’s depressing. I need a dose of purple!”

Dara Caponigro, Editor-in-chief of Veranda:

“In the home, I love purple mixed with neutrals, either grey or mousey taupe. The combinations are soothing, yet dramatic. That’s what we had in mind when designing our October cover, quiet greige with a punchy purple logo.”

Is this a trend? Will we be seeing more touches of purple in interiors in the coming months? I personally think that purple is going to be one of the next hot colors. I love the moodier shades that have a lot of grey. What are your thoughts about purple? Do you use in your own interior? Or will you now consider incorporating it into your interior since it seems to be a trend?

Jewelry for Your Door

A door knocker is the first sign of what lies within.

GRANT K. GIBSON is an interior designer, but that doesn’t stop him from thinking about what homes look like on the outside. Particularly when it comes to the front door. Or the door knocker, to be precise.

Mr. Gibson, 32, a San Francisco designer named one of five designers to watch by Elle Decor magazine last year, describes himself as “pretty obsessed.”

On recent trips to cities like Venice, Paris and Cartagena, he photographed hundreds of door knockers, posting many of them on his blog (grantkgibson.blogspot.com).

“As I researched them, I realized that they were related to the trades of the people who lived there,” Mr. Gibson said. “That’s not the case today, but I like door knockers that are very individual and personal.”

He continued, “The design of the door can be pretty basic, but then a door knocker is like a piece of jewelry.” By selecting something unusual, he added, “you can personalize your front door and really make it your own.”

During a visit to New York, Mr. Gibson went searching for more door knockers.

He began at E. R. Butler & Co. in SoHo, where he quickly found many he liked. One had a lion’s head more than 10 inches tall that reminded him of pieces he had seen in Italy.

“I love this because it’s so big,” he said. “There’s something about that scale.”

He also admired a rough-looking wrought-iron knocker based on a design by Samuel Yellin, which felt “almost medieval.”

Next up was P. E. Guerin in the West Village, where he dug through piles of dusty hardware, unearthing a ghoulish-looking item: a gargoyle-like head with a ring dangling from its mouth.

“It’s got a gothic feel,” he said, adding that it would only get better with age. “I like the dirt.”

At the Gracious Home Chelsea Design Center, Mr. Gibson found several pieces with a modern aesthetic. One was the DK7 round door knocker by Rocky Mountain Hardware.

“It feels hand-forged,” he said, referring to the rough texture.

“It’s good to come and see these things in person, so you can feel and touch.”

He also selected a knocker designed by Frank Gehry with a curvaceous handle on a rectangular base.

“I like the softness of it, like in his architecture,” he said. “It also feels nice in the hand.”
But whether one’s tastes run to the modern or to the traditional, Mr. Gibson stressed the importance of giving the selection of a door knocker some serious thought. It creates the first impression a visitor has of your home, he said, “setting the theme and tone” of everything that follows.

I think that you might agree that this might actually take the prize for the most attractive option. Only a block from my apartment, I had to check it out. At first glance, I thought it was the real deal. Upon closer inspection, I realized that it was a porta potty in the style of a London phone booth.

This is not something that you see everyday. Brilliant. What do you think? Is this taking it too far? Or it is clever and creative? Would love to know what you think.

If you are like me, you are constantly tearing things out of magazines and dog-earring articles to read later. Everything from inspiration shots that I love, ideas that I want to remember, recipes that I want to try and places that I want to visit.

It can be overwhelming to keep all of your files organized and updated, and honestly with so much content online these days, it is even more of a challenge.

I am sort of obsessed and inspired with a site called Pinterest. The concept behind it is sort of genius. (It’s one of those moments when you think, “why didn’t I come up with that idea?!”)

What I love about it is that I can be on any website and I can capture the photo and save it online in virtual inspiration boards that I have created for myself (hosted on the Pinterest site). I might come across a beautiful kitchen on a blog late at night, and now all I have to do is pin it to one of my Pinterst boards. The image is then saved online forever. For me this has been a huge time saver and really kind of fun to put together. Maybe a little addictive too. I like that you can also share your online information with other friends online and see what they are also “pinning” (and obsessing) about too!

Based in San Francisco and New York, 2010 A-List “Designer to Watch” Grant K. Gibson designs spaces that Elle Décor described as “eclectic, livable, and easy on the eyes.” This kitchen/dining space, outfitted with appliances from Bosch, including a built- in French- door, bottom freezer refrigerator, exemplifies Gibson’s relaxed approach. Vintage furnishings mix with a modern chandelier in a space that also has a lighthearted touch: The designer papered the backsplash in Chinese restaurant menus, a graphic nod to New Yorkers’ penchant for takeout.

Decorating with Gray

Elle Décor recently asked six designers (including me!) about the color gray and how we like to use it.

“Gray is often the perfect in-between color. Not too bright, not too dark, it can add a much-desired touch of mystery and drama to a room.”

“In this dining room, I used gray as a backdrop to play up the other colors,” says Gibson. “The green leather dining chair and bold patterned painted floor pop against the walls.”

City Grazing

As you can see from this childhood photo of me (Yes, this is really a photo of me!), I have been fond of goats for many years. I have lived in big cities my entire life. Perhaps due to this, I’m fascinated by farms and, especially, farm animals.

It is out of the ordinary to drive down the street and see live animals roaming in someone’s yard - it really makes you pull over to check things out. I just had to find out why in the world these goats were there. It turns out that putting goats in your yard is actually a service called City Grazing.

City Grazing is a San Francisco-based goat landscaping business. An environmentally friendly solution to weed control, who’s business rents out goats to clear public and private land. Whether you have acres or an overgrown backyard, their goats would be eager to eat your weeds and aid in fire prevention, naturally. While they are not out on the job, the herd lives on pasture in San Francisco’s Bayview district, between the SF Bay Railroad and cement recycling plant.

Goats grazing is an ecologically sound practice that eliminates the need for toxic herbicides, chemicals, and gas-powered lawn mowers. They clear brush in areas that people or machines cannot easily reach, like steep slopes or ditches. The goats can help restore soil fertility by providing organic fertilizer.

Why Choose Goats?

• Goats can eat weeds in terrain that is difficult or impossible to mow – steep slopes, between rocks, etc.
• Goats can eat plants that are hard to remove by hand, such as poison oak, thistles and blackberry.
• A managed goat grazing plan can reduce and potentially eliminate species of weeds and invasive plants from an area.
• They eat the plants that fuel wildfires, improving firefighters’ ability to manage and stop fires.

Thought that you might enjoy this article in last weekend’s Wall Street Journal. I was interviewed for the article. The article talks about making minor tweaks to achieve a very different look for your interior.

The topic is timely as I am personally in the middle of this process myself. I am making some changes (and am excited to share them with you in the upcoming months). Something fresh, with some more modern touches and a little bit more color. A new version of me. I think of my own apartment as a laboratory for experiments (far better to make mistakes at home vs. more costly ones with my clients).

Introducing 'the refresh': Minimally invasive décor tweaks that give interiors a major lift

People think what decorators do is a kind of home-based bowling strike: you knock down all the pins, and set them up again—with different pins.

But the best decorators—the ones with repeat clients—will tell you that after the big job is done, they get called back in over the years to refresh it and fine-tune it. The "refresh" is decorating lite: no big budget, no big headache, but big effect. There was nothing wrong in the first place. The refresh is just, fresher. Decorators say they have more fun with the refresh, and it shows in the work. The client is pleased with them, or they wouldn't have called back. The budget might be modest but it's not being shared with architects or contractors.

Decorators say it's largely a question of getting people to look at what they have and as Benjamin Dhong, a designer in San Francisco, put it, "fall in love all over again." Elissa Cullman, in New York, called it "fluffing." Eric Cohler called it "nuance." Kara Mann in Chicago called it "Zsa-Zsa-ing," after Ms. Gabor, who was strong on surprise. Ms. Mann, returning to a shocking orange dining room she created, refreshed it by wallpapering the ceiling.

In speaking with designers across the country, a primer began to emerge. Yes, you're dealing with arrangement, color, light, furnishings, paint, fabric, etc.—the ABCs of decorating—but at a sophisticated, secondary level.

Edit. "Take everything out of the room, then assess," said Amy Lau, a New York designer, on the theory that you do your best thinking about getting dressed when you're naked.

"You accumulate tons of stuff. Take it all out, then layer it back in, and clean it up."
Brad Ford explained, "I go in and get rid of stuff: clutter-editing. Your eye doesn't know where to land. People can't believe the difference, without having spent any money." And clear corners. "If the corners are clear, your eye says, 'I can see the room.'"

Matthew Patrick Smyth put it this way: "Purge. Things from trips, gifts, what the kids bring home. You lose perspective. 'Do I need this in my life?' The answer is 'No.' Look at the place cold, as though you were showing up for a party. Think 'thrift shop.'"
"Keep an eye on everything," Mr. Smyth continued. "We're not looking at our bedding, our dusty lampshades, the six-year-old sisal rug, towels, what's faded or uncleanable. You can only wash something so many times."

Look at yourself. "Peoples' lives change," Ms. Cullman said. "They become more formal, less formal." If you entertain more now, concentrate on the public spaces, like the living and dining rooms, how they look and work. If you spend more time with the family, concentrate on the family room, the kitchen and bedrooms.
"Decide how you want the room to feel," decorator Elizabeth Martin suggested. And prioritize decisions accordingly. "Identify why you like what you like," Ms. Lau said. "Is it color, memory, texture?"

Buy a few beautiful new vases: they tend to "date" quickly, said Mr. Smyth. And spend a portion of the money you saved by not replacing the sofa on a budget for fresh flowers, advised decorator Daniel Pafford. "Living things make an enormous difference," he said.

Repurpose a room. "Create another 'task' place, like a small table for a meal in a bedroom, or a desk in a living room," Markham Roberts, a New York decorator, said. "Adding a different-type piece of furniture to a room changes the way you use it."

Create unpredictable relationships. "Move things from room to room; what gives pieces their energy is their relation to each other," said Mr. Dhong, who moved a grand dining room sideboard into a hallway, where it was "out of context, and younger-looking. You looked at it." Mr. Dhong uses chests of drawers as bedside tables, which create convenient surfaces for lamps and stacks of books.

Organize, and organize richly. "Hermès makes great straw trays, where things can be organized," said Stan Topol, an Atlanta decorator. "Make the functional beautiful. You need to do it anyway, so buy a great thing, instead of an ordinary thing, that organizes your life." Mr. Ford observed, "It's important to contain things. Big baskets in a family room or playroom, to throw everything in. Beautiful woven baskets, with lids, create texture too."

Identify the 'dealmakers' in a room. Ms. Cullman and her senior designer, Tracey Pruzan, advised focusing on the signature pieces, and letting them dictate what happens next, because "it's hard to know what to change" when you start, said Ms. Pruzan. It might be a favorite piece, an expensive one you don't want to replace, an inherited item or the biggest thing in the room—but it's staying.

"Make it the focus," advised Amanda Nisbet, a New York designer, who wrestled with two red sofas a client wouldn't give up. She put them in the middle of the room, where they looked brave, not embarrassed, she said.

Reverse historical direction. Switch out a traditional coffee table for a radical period piece (steel and glass '70s-era, say) to punch some of the stuffing out of the upholstered pieces that surround it, suggested Mr. Gibson. Or replace it with small moveable tables that can be pulled up to seats, said Mr. Topol, who also pleads for tighter seating arrangements, so that people can actually hear each other.

Sara Story, a New York designer, was called back into a Crosby Street apartment, where she replaced a traditional dining room chandelier, above a traditional dining table, with a contemporary glass pendant.
"It totally changed the room," she said. Similarly, Ms. Story replaced a Jonathan Adler rug in the contemporary living room with a traditional Tibetan silk rug, making that space in the loft-like apartment "an elegant room," she said.

Make the small stuff big. Because it was refreshment and not renovation, Ms. Story devoted an inordinate part of the budget to details, like throw pillows. She commissioned a handwoven fabric from a design atelier in Bogota, Colombia, through Cristina Grajales, a gallery in New York, making the pillows "objects of luxury" rather than accents.

Do some big stuff on the quiet. Aurélien Gallet, in New York, will adjust a sofa's shape, when the piece is taken apart to reupholster, making it deeper or higher for the client's comfort. Mr. Topol, in Atlanta, will repitch dining chairs, adding to the fill in the back so that the chair "sits" more perfectly when used.

Paint. "Color is the cheapest thing you can do," Mario Buatta said. "Color changes the point of view of a room." He once talked a client out of replacing all her furniture. "The walls went from yellow to dark green and the furniture came to life again."

"Paint the ceiling instead of the walls," Mr. Smyth said. "That's what the light's bouncing off of. The trim too—it gets beat up, with vacuums, fingerprints. Give the trim and the doors a coat of paint and everything looks fresh. I've lived with the same glazed red for the last 20 years, but I play with the trim."

Ms. Ridder left a pink bedroom un-repainted, but painted a tailoring trim in a chocolate brown at the walls' edges, to sharpen the room's angles.

The sad truth. "You pass the five or the six year mark, and you get that phone call," said Jeffrey Alan Marks in Santa Monica. Mr. Marks is currently one of the Bravo Network's "Million Dollar Decorators." "Things wear out."

"Eighty percent of clients want to replace things with a new version of what they had," he said. "I try to talk them out of it. That's the true art of decorating."

Mr. Gallet was planning to reupholster a piece in a new fabric when the client told him, "I love this pattern," he recalled—referring to the fabric that was already there. The decorator reordered the old pattern in blue, not red.
Everyone was happy.

On fire

I thought that I would share with you a little something that my office recently designed.

Instead of printing business cards, we decided to have matchbooks printed - which actually turned out to be more cost-effective and an appealing advertising vehicle.

If you are like me, you have a bowl or collection of matches at home. It's such a great reminder of the places that you have been to and seen. Some people have collections from all around the world. Can you limit yourself to only taking just one?

Seems that not a lot of places have matches anymore - likely due to the nearly universal ban on indoor smoking. The days of Don Draper seem to be over.

We designed and printed thousands of these and passed them out recently for our two recent showcase houses. My idea was that people would then take the matches and have them at home and use them. I was tickled this past weekend when a friend reached into her drawer and out came my matches to light her candles.

Why not customize your own matches for your own home? Maybe put your monogram on them?

Cherries Jubilee

Summer fruit. How can you really go wrong? I look forward to this time of year all year. Fresh watermelon, the ripest peaches, tomatoes, and my favorite: CHERRIES!

You see them everywhere right now - at the grocery store and at the farmers market. Seeing those dark, ripe cherries always makes me think of homemade cocktail cherries. You may ask yourself what the point is. Can’t you just buy those bright maraschino cherries in a jar that last forever?

It really couldn’t be any easier.

By taking the time now, in just a few months you can enjoy tasty cocktails during fall and winter.

I start with pitting the cherries (trying to leave a stem on them, just because I think it adds a nice look.) If you don’t have a cherry pitter, I recommend getting one - they are pretty inexpensive and are available at most food gadget stores (This really saves time and is much less messy.)

The next step is to take a huge jar (with a lid) and fill it with the cherries. Next, pour a bottle of bourbon on top. Then add ½ cup of brown sugar. You could also add a vanilla pod if you like as well. Cover and you are done. It’s just that simple. You could place this in your refrigerator if you want. I feel like it takes up too much room, so I put it on a shelf in my pantry. You don’t have to worry about the cherries going bad, as the alcohol will prevent that from happening.

I really don’t do much at all to the mixture for months. If you wanted to, you could stir or turn the container that the mixture lives in. You could leave it for a few weeks, but I think that at least 3-6 months is a good amount of time. This is the kind of thing that gets better with age.

I think that this makes a lovely gift and is far better than the fake maraschino cherries that you get at the store. I personally like the way that the cherry liquor tastes in cocktails- so with this I suggest using a quality spirit that you would actually consume on its own.

I think that you will love the way the bourbon adds that smoky oakiness to the cherries, and how the cherries give their sweetness to the bourbon.

Elle Décor New York Concept House

I have most certainly racked up the frequent flyer miles in the last few months.
Primarily flying back and forth to New York (poor me…right?). We are working on a few great client projects in New York, including a fabulous apartment in Tribeca.

I know that I mentioned a few months ago that I would be participating in the New York showcase for Elle Décor. After designing a space for the Elle Décor showcase house last fall here in San Francisco (remember my bright pink chinoiserie teenage girls bedroom?), I couldn’t say no at the amazing opportunity to design the kitchen and dining room space.

The project was open for the month May and was a huge success. I am not sure I remember much of the month of May - with two showcase houses open in two cities!

My concept for designing this space was really to take a more casual approach.

Mixing in vintage pieces kept the space feeling light and relaxed. I really wanted to juxtapose texture, objects and shapes (I used a vintage French 1970’s table) against the sleek modern cabinetry. (Special thanks to Bosch for providing new stainless appliances: range, dishwasher and refrigerator)

I really wanted to also use the space to highlight two artists: Jennifer Ament and Michelle Vaughan. I just loved the whimsy in both of their work.

The light fixture was designed by Workstead and really created a wonderful sculptural and industrial layer to the space.
The Moroccan runner was from The Rug Company.

I always love to add a bit of humor and fun to my work.
I wanted to play a bit with the fact that so many New Yorkers don’t really cook or use their kitchens much.

I don’t recall Carrie Bradshaw cooking at all in her kitchen.

To play a bit with this and the concept of “take out” and “delivery”- I took Chinese food menus and created a fun and whimsical backsplash.

I saw this space as a place where someone might have a cup of coffee and yogurt in the morning or put out very simple snacks for a cocktail party.

Faking it

You might be horrified with what I am about to write, or perhaps you will agree with me on this one…

Fake flowers.

What do you think of them?

Come on. What are the first thoughts that come pop into your head?

Well, if you are (were) like me, those exact same words that popped into your head surely popped into mine.

Let’s be honest here. Have you ever used fake flowers before?

Until recently, I had never dreamed of ever using artificial flowers. I thought that that the concept was awful.

Why the leap over the side? For me, I needed to have flowers out for an entire month that looked bright and fresh. I couldn’t be at the flower market everyday (nor could I afford them) nor constantly making sure that they looked perfect.

I was shocked by how realistic the flowers looked. Comment after comment of how beautiful the flowers were.

I have to say some people had no clue at all. People raved about them. They touched them and still thought that they were real?

Why? How?

Was it because they just looked THAT good?

Or was it that you wouldn’t expect that I would use fake flowers?

I have to say that I really loved it when people reached down for a smell and they would comment: “Oh, they smell so good”. It was hard to not want to laugh. Perhaps they really were some of the best fake flowers that I have ever seen? I never thought that I would be ever writing to this or admitting this secret.

Would you put fake flowers in your house? Or maybe you already do. Tell me why.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the topic.

I am not sure if this has officially converted me. I don’t think that I am ever going to give up my love of freshly cut flowers. Maybe I will use them again someday. It’s great to know that options out there exist.

It has been raining like mad here in San Francisco. So to brighten things up, I will gladly send one happy reader a bouquet of these lovely bright pink peonies.

After countless hours, weeks and months of preparing, it finally is here!
The house launched officially last Saturday morning (after a few successful opening parties).

For me the process was an important personal experience. It was seven years ago this week that I launched my interior design business after moving to San Francisco from New York. Seven years ago, I designed what was the smallest room in the house (about the size of a closet). My vision was called “A Gentleman’s Retreat.” I filled the room with old trophy cups, worn rugs, a wing back chair, and portraits from the flea market. I even had an antique French bird cage with my own yellow canary, who sang and entertained all of the visitors. After following up the subsequent years with an all black and white room and then a master bathroom and dressing room, I took off some time from doing showcase houses. I must say that I really missed the process.

When I look back and think that it really wasn’t that many years ago that I started in San Francisco, and in that short amount of time, I have been fortunate enough to be given a much more prominent room this year – the dining room.

In the years since my first showcase house (on my VERY, VERY shoestring budget – for which I took a personal loan from family friends to make happen) , I have learned, grown and evolved into my own skin as a designer.
I take chances and have more confidence. My travels around the world have proved to be a priceless education in which I have been exposed to history, cultures and inspiration. Really, do we ever really stop learning and growing as people? I know that I will ever stop learning as a designer. That is part of why I love what I do so much. My days are so varied and I have the opportunity to work with people on all kinds of projects that push me to the limits, challenge me, and allow me to grow.

Some people that have come into the showcase and seen my design have been amazed that I have put such bright color and juxtaposed classic pieces with modern pieces. I love pushing the limits and striking a balance with mixing materials and styles. I honestly do a lot of work with bright colors as well as mixing styles. I have done stark modern and bright colorful houses that make your eyes pop.

I think that I get associated with being a neutral-toned, classical designer.
So it is thrilling for me to show the world that there is a different side to my work. I feel like my work is still very classically based - I genuinely think that is where design begins. If you know how to design using classic styles, then you can play a bit more and mix things up.

For this showcase dining room, I was trying to strike a balance with color, texture, materials and styles. I wanted to create a background of grey by painting ceiling to look like fog (which rolls over San Francisco every afternoon), and applied grey grass cloth to the walls.

This is the BEFORE shot. The space had a mural that was in very bad condition and sadly could not be restored.

I took a graphic approach to the design of the floor, which helped to keep the space light, open and airy. I selected a octagon pattern for the floor (3 feet in diameter.) My decorative painter Katherine Jacobus painted the floor white with layer after layer of white deck paint and then hand taped out the pattern on the floor. I am a huge black and white fan. White brightens the room while the black grounds it.

The pattern is based on a design from a floor from an English country house that I visited a few years back (I mentioned that I influenced by my travels!). When I saw the floor, the pattern was done with wood tones and the pattern was inlayed with a darker wood. I definitely see how designer David Hicks got his inspiration for his graphic patterns.

The next part of my design was finding a table large enough to fit the space. The table is 10 feet long and almost 5 feet wide. Massive. No matter where I looked, I just couldn’t find something big enough.

I was inspired by walnut burled wood, Milo Baughman and playing with a 1970’s sort of look. We started with our furniture builder (Berger Design Build) on the design of the table, and quickly learned the sheets of burl in the size that I needed would be a rare find as well as extremely expensive . (For those of you that don’t know how a showcase works with the pieces of furniture: typically designers invest their own money into projects, or can borrow pieces from vendors) We opted then to build the table and then faux paint the entire table to look just like wood! (Hours and hours of labor, coats of paint and details!)

I worked with the amazing Lindsey Adelman studio in New York to custom design and build a huge fixture to hang over the table. It is made of solid brushed brass and hand-blown globes. I loved the organic feel in its shape, industrial, but refined.

I then decided to play with classical pieces, like the blue and white Chinese ginger and temple jars. I added a pop of pink with beautiful peonies. It is hard to see from the photos, but my window treatments are a dark navy blue (cashmere and wool blend) that really relates to the blue of the jars. They are so luxurious, my drapery workroom (Madina Aryeh Custom Workroom) and I were ready to wrap ourselves up in them many times. I really love a comfortable dining room chair (nothing is worse than sitting at a dinner party and being stuck in a bad chair), so I went with a Louis XVI style chair and left it in raw wood form and then brightened them up with a bright Kelly Green leather with an antique nail head detail.

Lastly, I was honored to work with a fabulous collection of very important modern art from the personal collection of Foster-Gwin in Jackson Square. We selected a Woelffler, a Lobdell and pair of Gechtoff. I am not really one to pick art to match a fabric or sofa. I don’t really understand that concept. What I do know is that this group of art somehow looks like it was made to fit in this space. Somehow the colors and textures just work all together with each other and in the space perfectly.

Overall, I am thrilled with outcome of my room and thought that you would enjoy some of the behind the curtain details with some of the process photos of how it all came together.

I am thrilled to share this project with you. This feels like thinking about traditional in a whole new way. This is not the way your grandmother lived. Keeping it fresh and juxtapositioning styles that creates a update style that seems very today.

Elle Decor's Modern Life Concept house

Remember just last week I shared with you that we are designing the dining room at the Decorator Showcase in San Francisco?

Well, I have more news...
We were also asked to also design a space in an upcoming showcase in New York City (opening in mid-May) ELLE DECOR's Modern Life Concept house.

This means that we will actually have two showcases open in the month of May. One in San Francisco and one in New York!
It is truly an exciting spring.

This project is Elle Decor's first showcase in New York City and a beautiful newly designed building near the High Line.

This project is interesting in that the designers that Elle Decor has chosen are all up-and-coming designers.

There are ten designers creating spaces in seperate two bedroom apartments. The five that have been announced so far are the "5 to Watch" (you might remember that Elle Decor honored me with this recognition last year). There are five other designers that are also working like mad that have not been formally announced yet (these five are the designers that Elle Decor has selected for the same honor in 2011). I have been sworn to secrecy on this, but I can tell you that the group of designers that I am working with is an extremely talented bunch. It is going to be a great project of fantastic undiscovered talent. I think this decision was interesting on the part of Elle Decor. It's a wonderful chance for people to discover new talent and give designers that are not well established a chance of their own.

For our design we are teaming with Bosch to design the kitchen/dining room. Our design is both modern and relaxed with a great mix of vintage pieces to complement the beautiful contemporary and clean lines of the dark wood cabinetry.

The ELLE DECOR Modern Life Concept House will be open to the public on the following weekends: May 20, 21, and 22; May 27, 28, 29, and 30; and June 3, 4, and 5.

Visiting hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $30.

Proceeds will benefit Housing Works.

I can assure you that this is going to be THE next hot blog, filled with history, her obsessions, tidbits, travels and projects.
I have had the privilege of knowing Martha since moving to San Francisco. She is an absolute delight and has been a mentor to me over the years.

Her design firm is based in San Francisco and New York. Her resume includes Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani and the Lauder family. She has an extensive knowledge of fine art, including studying at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts.

How could I ever forget my first trip to the Paris flea market under Martha's wing? Or our dogs playing together at her stunning home in Napa?
I'm not sure if we first bonded over our love of black and white or peonies. Whatever it was, I am Martha's biggest fan.

Colombia travel story for Highgloss magazine

Destination Style: COLOMBIA

COLOMBIA for Highgloss:

I have to be honest: when I first told people that I had just booked my latest vacation to Colombia, I got quite a few looks, none of which were positive. I was asked if I needed a body guard. Was it safe? There were the obvious wisecracks about smuggling drugs back to the United States. Colombia has come a long way over the last decade. The years of a bad reputation are certainly no longer applicable.

On the personal side, it’s not like I exactly blend in traveling to South America particularly well. At 6 foot 4 with light-freckled skin and blonde hair, I got a few looks walking around. The first night upon arriving in Colombia, I was nervous. Like everyone who questioned my decision to travel to Colombia, my perspective had been influenced by years of media coverage in which the only mention of Colombia concerned drug-related violence. But my experience could not have been more positive. I had some of the best adventures and meals of my life. I left excited to schedule a return trip in the future.

CARTAGENA

When you mention Cartagena, the first thing that seems to come to people’s minds is Kathleen Turner (as romance novelist Joan Wilder) alongside Michael Douglas and their ridiculous adventure trying to cross Colombia to Cartagena. I have to admit that I watched the 1980’s film to prepare myself for the trip. To be really honest, after watching the movie, I wasn’t really sure what to expect.

I can’t believe that it was just a few months ago that I was enjoying relaxing days of the warm Caribbean air while strolling the cobbled streets. Old men push creaky carts laden with fresh fruit and halved coconuts. Charming hole-in-the-wall restaurants serve fresh fish and ceviches caught just hours before.

The vibrant seaside 16th century walled city (which the Spanish founded in 1533) is filled with some of the most beautiful and untouched colorful architecture. Perhaps this is why Gabriel Garcia Marquez maintains his ocean front property just off the Plaza San Diego (one of the most charming, residential squares in Cartagena).

I absolutely fell in love with the Palenque woman who wear multicolored outfits and walk around selling fruit (which they put in a large bowl and carry on their heads!)

Perhaps this untouched gem is going to be the next HOT place? Especially since Martha Stewart and Vice President Biden were also in town during my visit for Cartagena’s annual classical music festival. Additionally, The New York Times named Colombia as one of THE places to visit in 2011. Colombia’s reputation is deservedly changing.

If you are looking for a great vacation spot, I can’t suggest Cartagena enough. It is worth noting that it is just a two-hour flight from Miami, but there is hardly an American to be found strolling through this enchanting city.

List of hot spots and highlights of Cartagena:

1. Stroll around the Old City: No specific destination is required while strolling around the old city. The brightly colored architecture is breathtaking. There is fantastic food around the city, but try the delicious ceviches at La Cevicheria or Juan Del Mar, located adjacently by the Plaza de San Diego.

2. Dine at Restaurante La Vitrola: This Cuban restaurant is considered a classic in Cartagena, with live music and Cuban comfort cuisine. It conjures images of pre-Revolutionary Havana.

3. Have a cocktail on the ancient wall at the Café Del Mar: This bar is set atop the stone wall, with views of the old city as well as Cartagena’s modern city, Bocagrande.

4. Islas Del Rosario: The beaches surrounding Cartagena are not the most beautiful, but the white sand beaches of Islas Del Rosario are a short boat ride away. The serious beach bum can stay on spend days staying on the islands, but for the restless among us, be forewarned that there is little to do other than seriously relax.

5. Castilo San Felipe De Barajas: This Spanish fortress was originally built in 1536. It is strategically located to dominate the view of any potential invader approaching the city.

BOGOTA

While less known than other capitals in South America, Bogota is often called “the Athens of South America” owing its prominent intellectual tradition. This sprawling metropolis contains over 9 million inhabitants. Set at an elevation of over 8000 feet in the Andes, Bogota’s mild climate (average highs around 65 degrees year round) and frequent afternoon showers translate into a lush, verdant landscape.

The city is beginning to develop a modern public transportation infrastructure, but I hired a car-and-driver during the day (around $65 for an eight-hour day.) In the evenings, the city’s taxis proved very reliable and affordable. Although I was warned that taxis may try to overcharge a tourist, this was not my experience. Large hotels often have private cabs services for hotel patrons.

The cuisine in Bogota is as varied as can be found in most U.S. cities. It is clear that residents take good food seriously. In addition to Colombian cuisine, try Asian fusion, Peruvian, and Italian cuisine (I never expected to have such good pizza in Colombia). On the lighter side, I was surprised to find that Juan Valdez is actually a major commercial figure in Colombia - Café Juan Valdez is the Colombian equivalent of Starbucks.

List of hot spots and highlights of Bogota:

1. View the architecture and museums of La Candelaria: This old neighborhood contains beautiful ancient architecture, as well as some the city’s best museums. The Gold Museum (Museo del Oro) contains stunning examples of indigenous pre-Columbian gold work. The Casa de Moneda once served as a mint, but now contains several fantastic museums, including the Museo Botero and the art collection of the Banco de la Republica. In addition to the museums, the building itself is worth a visit. Try lunch at the Hotel de la Opera for fantastic views of La Candelaria’s architecture.

2. Centro Andino and the T-Zone: If there is any question whether American-style consumerism is successfully invading Colombia, look no further than this shopping and restaurant district. While a shopping mall may not seem to be an obvious tourist destination, Centro Andino is noteworthy for its vibrant nightlife and culinary destinations. Try the stellar Asian fusion at Wok (some of the only vegetables I had during my trip) or a hearty steak at Taurus.

3. View the architecture of the Plaza Bolivar: This area contains the Catedral Primada and the main buildings of the Colombian government, including the Palaco de Justicio, the location of 1985 terrorist invasion that provided the inspiration for the novel Bel Canto.

4. Enjoy classic Colombia fare at Restaurante Club Colombia: This restaurant seems a Colombian equivalent of an clubby American steakhouse. Try the classic Colombian potato soup ajiaco. The merengon for dessert is indescribably fantastic.

5. Try every kind of juice you can get your hands on: You’ll encounter new fruit juices on nearly every menu. Some favorites that are worth a try are the maracuya (a type of passionfruit), lulo, and guanabana.

San Francisco Decorator Showcase- dining room!

Not long ago, I was so excited to share with you the process and progress for my teenage girl's room at the Elle Décor Showcase.

Well, I am back again to announce that I have been working for the last few months on a very special showcase house: the dining room at the San Francisco Decorator Showcase house.

This is the fifth Showcase project on which I've worked. I'm beyond excited to work on such a wonderful space this year.

From the moment I walked into the dining room, I knew that I loved it. I feel in love with the high ceilings (14 feet), the windows and the scale of the space.

Sadly, the hand painted Chinoiserie mural had seen better days, so I made the decision to replace it with something new - to go in a completely new direction.

When I wrote about designing my last showcase space, I talked a little about pushing myself to new limits and new directions. I am doing the same thing again with this space. I'm having a wonderful time trying something new and different. This will be my version of a classic space but with a colorful modern twist. Working with each of my vendors has been a privilege - from custom furniture design, window treatments, decorative painting and lighting.

I am so excited to share with you more of the progress. Only three more weeks until the house opens.

Balenciaga at the de Young

What an honor to be on an exclusive tour this morning of the latest show to open at the de Young museum.

Leading my tour was none other than the exhibition curator- Hammish Bowles (European editor at large of Vogue).

I am thrilled to share these special photos that I took this morning.

I highly suggest taking a trip to the de Young and visiting this extraordinary collection.

As legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland vividly described him, “Balenciaga was the true son of a strong country filled with style, vibrant color, and a fine history,” who “remained forever a Spaniard… His inspiration came from the bullrings, the flamenco dancers, the fishermen in their boots and loose blouses, the glories of the church, and the cool of the cloisters and monasteries. He took their colors, their cuts, then festooned them to his own taste.” Curator Hamish Bowles notes, “Balenciaga’s ceaseless explorations and innovations ensured that his work was as intriguing and influential in his final collection as it had been in his first.”

You can feel the pulse of Spain beat in every garment in Balenciaga and Spain. A dress ruffle inspired by the flourish of a flamenco dancer’s bata de cola skirt; paillette-studded embroidery that glitters on a bolero jacket conjuring a nineteenth-century traje de luces (suit of lights) worn by a matador; clean, simple, and technically perfect lines that extrapolate the minimalist rhythms and volumes of the vestments of Spanish nuns and priests; a velvet-trimmed evening gown aesthetically indebted to the farthingale robe of a Velázquez Infanta.

On March 26, 2011, the de Young Museum in San Francisco opens Balenciaga and Spain, an exhibition curated by Hamish Bowles, featuring 120 haute couture garments, hats, and headdresses designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895–1972). The exhibition illustrates Balenciaga’s expansive creative vision, which incorporated references to Spanish art, bullfighting, dance, regional costume, and the pageantry of the royal court and religious ceremonies. Cecil Beaton hailed him as “Fashion’s Picasso,” and Balenciaga’s impeccable tailoring, innovative fabric choices, and technical mastery transformed the way the world’s most stylish women dressed.

The exhibition originated in 2010, in a presentation at the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute in New York City titled Balenciaga: Spanish Master. The exhibition was conceived by Oscar de la Renta, who began his career in fashion working at Balenciaga’s Madrid couture house in the 1950s. De la Renta invited Hamish Bowles to curate the exhibition. For the de Young Museum, the themes are expanded to include twice as many objects, drawn from museum and private collections around the world and including an unprecedented loan of 30 pieces from the House of Balenciaga in Paris, which generously opened its archives of historically significant Cristóbal Balenciaga garments, iconography, and related materials. In addition to displaying eight garments from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s own significant collection of Balenciaga, the exhibition features loans (some of which have never been exhibited before), from a number of important international institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée de la Mode et du Textile and the Musée Galliera in Paris, the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Hispanic Society of America, LACMA, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of the City of New York, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Texas Fashion Collection, as well as private couture collectors such as Sandy Schreier. A special loan of seventeen pieces comes from Hamish Bowles’s own collection. The ensembles featured include garments commissioned and worn by some of the world’s most iconic tastemakers, among them Doris Duke, Baroness Pauline de Rothschild, Countess Mona Bismarck, Gloria Guinness, Ava Gardner, Thelma Chrysler Foy, Claudia Heard de Osborne, and the Bay Area’s own Eleanor Christenson de Guigné and Elise Haas.

Balenciaga and Spain begins with an introductory gallery featuring three decades of Balenciaga’s signature silhouettes, all in tones of black, that demonstrate his mastery of volume, his sophisticated use of fabric and embellishments, and his supreme technical innovations. The exhibition then unfolds in six areas of focus:

Spanish Art — Balenciaga drew inspiration from the great artists of Spain: the atmospheric color palette of Goya, Velázquez’s portraits of courtiers and royalty, and the draped volumes of fabric in El Greco’s and Zurbarán’s haunting seventeenth-century images of saints. Included in the exhibition is Balenciaga’s iconic 1939 Infanta dress, a modernist interpretation of the dresses worn by the Infanta Margarita in Velázquez’s celebrated portraits—an inspiration that he revisits in a smart lace-trimmed day suit of 1938. Late in his career, Balenciaga turned to contemporary Spanish art and was inspired by the abstraction of Joan Miró’s paintings and the modernist, monumental sculptures of Basque countryman Eduardo Chilida.

Dance — Whether he literally represented it in such recognizable elements as the bata de cola (dress with a ruffled train) of the flamenco dancer, or more loosely suggested it in the use of lunares (polka-dot patterns), a bold, traditional print used in flamenco costumes, Balenciaga incorporated and abstracted the rich culture of Spanish dance in his work, using tiers of fabric, ruffles, flounces, and fabric choices that accentuated movement. Balenciaga was also captivated by the traje corto costume of the male flamenco dancer and deconstructed its elements of close fitting cropped bolero, cummerbund, and tight pants into his work. Flamenco’s influence can be seen in whimsical hats that accessorize the ensembles, simulating a flower tucked in a dancer’s hair or a scarf knotted around the head.

Bullfighting — “From his earliest collections, Balenciaga included designs that contained overt allusions to the costume of the matador,” writes Bowles. Using the traditional stiffened bolero of the matador, decorated with sumptuous embroidery, alamar (frog and braid trimming), and distinctive borlones (pompom tassels), as a starting point, Balenciaga softens the silhouette for his female clients throughout the 1940s and early 1950s. Here he collaborates with embroidery houses such as Bataille and Lesage to re-create the passmenterie, beading, and embroideries of the matador costumes, themselves as intricate as haute couture garments. By the 1960s, Balenciaga takes these embroideries and embellishments out of the traje de luces context and uses them as decoration on eveningwear and millinery. Inspiration also comes from the color palette of the matador’s capes and his work includes splashes of bright fuchsia, deep red, and vibrant yellow. Even the carnation, the traditional flower thrown in tribute to matador at the end of a successful bullfight, appears in Balenciaga’s work in embroideries and printed fabric.

Religious Life — A devout Catholic all his life, who once considered joining the priesthood, Balenciaga was deeply moved by both the everyday dress and the pageantry of the Spanish church. He reinterpreted elements suggesting a nun’s habit, a priest’s embroidered chasuble or severe black cassock, a monk’s hooded robe, and even the spectacular, brilliantly colored and embellished robes that clad the statues of the Madonna carried through the streets of Spain during Holy Week. It is here that Balenciaga’s technical mastery and tailoring shine as he plays with ideas of volume, structure, and linear purity.

The Spanish Court — “The dress of Spain’s monarchs, their families, and their courtiers, depicted in some of the most striking portraiture in the history of art, exerted a powerful effect on Balenciaga’s creative imagination,” notes Bowles. For example, he references early-seventeenth-century farthingales, distinctive features of Spanish court dress for three centuries, in a literal way, with silhouettes featuring exaggerated hips, and then abstracts them later in his career in the six-pointed peplums of evening gowns. Sumptuous embroideries, ermine tails, and pearl details present luxurious, contemporary versions of royal themes.

Regional Dress — Balenciaga’s imagination was fueled with ideas driven by the diverse regional costume of Spain and by some of the original folkloric pieces that he gathered for his personal collection. He translated traditional Spanish garments such as a mantón de Manila, a fringed silk shawl embroidered with brilliant floral motifs, into haute couture embroideries by Lesage that he used to decorate spectacular evening clothes. His shaggy vests of innovative mohair textiles recall the practical garments of a Navarran shepherd. Humble cloaks and capes reappear in sumptuous fabrics with voluminous lines. Loose, unfitted cotton piqué blouses evoking fishermen’s shirts recall the clothing of his Basque homeland. “Balenciaga revolutionized fashion by referencing the sturdy, utilitarian garments worn by the Spanish laboring classes—as well as the attitude and philosophy that shaped them—to create a new paradigm of mid-century elegance,” explains Bowles.

Bill Cunningham documentary

In a city of dedicated originals, New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham stands out as one who both knows how to capture the essence of the singular personality and clearly represents one himself. Entering his ninth decade, Cunningham still rides his Schwinn around Manhattan, putting miles between his street-level view of personal style and what the titans of fashion will come to discover down the road.

This heartfelt and honest documentary turns the camera on one who has so lovingly and selflessly captured the looks that have defined generations. And in the photographer’s chronicles of the events and people that captivate our beloved city, the film is just as much a portrait of New York as of Cunningham.

It is impossible to mention his name without prefacing it with the words, "the legendary photographer." He seems to shun publicity, preferring to stay behind the scenes and certainly behind the lens, focused on his work and his subjects.

"I am not interested in celebrities and their free dresses, I am interested in their clothes." - Bill Cunningham

I love his signature look of a uniform consisting of a pair of khaki pants and a blue jacket with lots of pockets.

I was thrilled to attend a preview screening of this new documentary this afternoon. I can't suggest seeing it enough! It is utterly charming and inspirational. You will come away with a huge smile on your face.

Interior designer, set decorator, sculptor, jewelry designer - there were few art forms the late Tony Duquette did not explore.

Discover the stunning interiors, fanciful furnishings, and glamorous past of a design icon.

In 1935, when Duquette was just an art student, Bullock’s department store asked him to redesign its lobby with a fresh seasonal look. Upon seeing his work, legendary decorator Elsie de Wolfe uttered the fated words, “Who is this kid, I’ve got to meet him.” de Wolfe took Duquette under her wing and sent his career soaring.

With his prestige and notoriety on the rise, Duquette needed an amazing space to match.

In 1952, he moved his family and office into the grand West Hollywood Tony Duquette Studios and it quickly became the social elite’s preferred stomping ground. “If these walls could talk,” says Hutton Wilkinson (Tony's long time creative director), “they would scream.” Influential figures like Greta Garbo, Aldous Huxley and Mary Pickford were drawn to the Studio for its creative energy, lavish setting, and convivial crowd.

Duquette’s over-the-top approach to luxury design landed him numerous residential projects around the globe. His style was typically classified as “organic baroque,” but he was no one-trick pony.

This Bel Air residence shows off Duquette’s more modern side and his ability to adapt to the need of a diverse client roster.

Duquette also turned his creative energies toward the Hollywood stage. “He designed tons of sets and costumes for MGM musicals that he didn’t even get credit for,” says Wilkinson, “but the films that he designed from the beginning to the end like Kismet, Can Can, and Lovely to Look At put him in the history books.”

Finding himself in need of a space to relax and dream freely, Duquette bought a 150-acre ranch in the mountains of Malibu and created Sortilegium - a fantastical vacation home that he and his wife, Elizabeth, spent decades building. It was comprised of 22 structures, all in different styles, including “Asian, Indian, modern, and plenty of other styles only Tony could dream up,” says Wilkinson. “It was a very magical place.”

Duquette lived off and on at his legendary Los Angeles house, Dawnridge, from the time he was a newlywed in 1949 until the day he died in 1999. Today his wildly creative assemblage of rooms and gardens is home to Tony Duquette Studios, how celebrating its 70th year in business.

Under the creative direction of Hutton Wilkinson, Duquette’s mesmerizing designs and unforgettable style continues to make its mark.

Taking stock

As you know, I love to cook. Nothing makes me happier after a long day of working than to spend some time in the kitchen. It honestly relaxes me. It is a time of day when I can spend time with myself and be creative in a different way. Mixing flavors, creating new ideas (trust me - they are not always successful) and cooking with fresh seasonal ingredients makes me happy.

I always seem to be taking photos of fresh produce while traveling. I daydream and think how lovely it would be to rent a small apartment in Paris (or anywhere really) and be able to shop at local markets and experience the local flavors.

While I can’t take the credit for one of my new favorite recipes, I can honestly say that there is something about this concept that really excites me. I've kicked myself of late, thinking, “Why haven’t I done this for years?!?”.

This might be boring for some. I do like to keep you all on your toes and throw a little food chat on my blog every so often. This concept is just so easy, I can’t resist sharing.

One of my biggest peeves is wasting food. Especially fresh fruit and vegetables. Here in San Francisco, we are required to compost our food scraps (you can get fined if you mix food with other things). I was always throwing scraps of vegetables away. Skins of onion, tips of asparagus, carrot pieces, celery stalks.

Anyway, to make a long story short: instead of throwing my scraps of vegetables away, I pop them into a zip lock bag in my freezer and let them collect until there is a substantial quantity. If you cook as much as I do, you can fill up a few bags in no time.

Just last week, I was going out of town and I was frustrated that I had purchased some produce that was going to go bad if I didn’t use it before I left. So I decided to freeze the vegetables as well. Instead of just throwing them away, I was able to use them.

Now comes the fun and easy part.

I take the vegetable scraps out of the freezer and throwing them into a large stock pot. I fill the pot with water and simmer for several hours. I might add some bay leaves or other herbs, plus salt and pepper. In no time you have the most delicious broth you've ever tasted. Its easy, healthy and a great way to use something in a new and different way that you otherwise might be wasting.

Grant K. Gibson’s blog draws readers—and new clients

San Francisco–based interior designer Grant K. Gibson has been turning plenty of heads in recent months, and much of the attention is being generated by his savvy use of digital media. In fact, even the editors at ELLE DECOR first discovered Gibson through his blog before naming him as one of the five designers to watch in the June 2010 issue and asking him to participate in the magazine’s first showhouse. “It’s how a writer from The New York Times found me as well,” says Gibson, noting that his blog, and the resulting press, has helped him expand beyond San Francisco, bringing in work from new clients in places like New York and Florida.

Gibson’s experience with digital media began in September 2008, when he started his blog to share photos with friends while visiting Paris. But when he returned, he decided to keep it going, writing frequent tidbits about his design process and travels. “I also read other blogs and started to link to them, which helped bring more people to read mine,” he says. “When the blog started, it was just five friends looking at travel photos; today, I get 20,000 hits a month.”

Although it started as a casual affair, Gibson says his blog has been surprisingly effective at bringing him new clients. “I just signed a new client who read my blog,” he says. “She said ‘I see that you have dogs. I see that you cook. I see that you decorate your front steps with pumpkins. It seems like you’re a real person to me.’ That’s different from a static website. She got to know a lot about me before we even met.”

At the same time, the blog serves as a living archive for Gibson’s inspirational images and thoughts. It also forces him to edit—when he returns from a trip with hundreds of photos, he selects only the best few images to post online. Another advantage is that his online musings help spark new conversations with existing clients. “One client e-mailed me to say that when I did a post about my visit to Carolyne Roehm’s house in Connecticut, she loved the fact that Carolyne had no area rugs in the living room,” says Gibson. “So, she asked if we could skip the area rug in her living room.”

Although he also uses Facebook and Twitter, Gibson’s focus remains his blog, where he has more room to stretch out. “With Twitter, I’m always freaked out by the limited word count,” he says “I don’t love it, but I might link to a blog posting, or put up a quick picture of a dinner I’m at. It doesn’t hurt.”

Indeed, the strategy of simply putting himself out there, by all means possible, has been rewarding. “Some designers I talk to don’t understand social media and why you would blog, Facebook, and Twitter,” says Gibson. “But you never know what could happen. Someone sees something and shows it to a friend, and then the chain reaction is quite phenomenal.”

Knock knock

If you remember my trip to Venice last year-you might know that I have a slight fascination with door knockers.

I have thousands of photos of door knockers from my travels around the world. I joke that I am working on a really boring coffee table book.

Here were some of my favorites from my trip to Cartagena (this is my edited version- too many favorites to leave some out!)

I loved the huge array of ornate door knockers that can be seen on almost every door around the city.

I was really interested in the history of the door knockers and to why they were all different. Some of animals (fish, lions, lizards) and all different sizes (some as big as two feet!)

After a little research, I learned that the shape of the animals denoted the family's principal trade, for example: fish- merchant, lion- teacher. I also learned that the number of times that someone knocks on the door depends on how well the dweller and the visitor know each other. The fewer the knocks, the more distant the relationship. One knock for a stranger and four for a good friend.

I definitely had people looking at me while on this trip (its not like I exactly blend in). I assure you I got the most looks from people wondering why I was spending so much time taking multiple photos of every door knocker in town!

Romancing the Stone

When you mention Cartagena, the first thing that seems to come to people’s minds is Kathleen Turner (as romance novelist Joan Wilder) alongside Michael Douglas and their ridiculous adventure trying to cross Colombia to Cartagena. I have to admit that I watched the 1980’s film to prepare myself for the trip. To be really honest, after watching the movie, I wasn’t really sure what to expect.

I can’t believe that it was just a week ago that I was enjoying relaxing days of the warm Caribbean air while strolling the cobbled streets. Old men push creaky carts laden with fresh fruit and halved coconuts. Charming hole-in-the-wall restaurants serve fresh fish and ceviches caught just hours before.

The vibrant seaside 16th century walled city (which the Spanish founded in 1533) is filled with some of the most beautiful and untouched colorful architecture. Perhaps this is why Gabriel Garcia Marquez maintains his ocean front property just off the Plaza San Diego (one of the most charming, residential squares in Cartagena).

I absolutely fell in love with the Palenque woman who wear multicolored outfits and walk around selling fruit (which they put in a large bowl and carry on their heads!)

Perhaps this untouched gem is going to be the next HOT place? Especially since Martha Stewart and Vice President Biden were also in town during my visit for Cartagena’s annual classical music festival. Additionally, The New York Times named Colombia as one of THE places to visit in 2011. Colombia’s reputation is deservedly changing.

If you are looking for a great vacation spot, I can’t suggest Cartagena enough. It is worth noting that it is just a two-hour flight from Miami, but there is hardly an American to be found strolling through this enchanting city.

2011 has really kicked off with a great start!

I have just returned from my trip to South America (Colombia to be exact- where I traveled to Bogota, Villa de Leyva and Cartagena).

I can't wait to share my photos and adventures with you. I am still sorting the photos (over 2,000!).

Now I have the travel bug for some more exotic adventures. Thinking of some options.

Elle Decor 2011 resolutions

I was asked by Elle Decor (along with 10 other designers) to share my design resolutions for 2011.

Here is what I had to say:

“I want to take more chances with color and pattern. In the teenage bedroom I designed at the ELLE DECOR San Francisco showhouse, I used a bright pink chinoiserie wallpaper (from de Gournay), and zebra fabric headboards. I stepped out of my normal comfort zone with something bold and colorful. I learned that taking risks can be fun.”

A wish fulfilled

It is hard for me to write this story, but I wanted to share with you a recent project that I have been working on for the last few months. This project really holds a special place in my heart.

I recently had the opportunity to meet with a wonderful 13-year- old girl named Jordan Barrett. Sadly, Jordan had recently lost her twin sister, Jensen, to cancer.

During Jensen’s battle with cancer, she chronicled a journal in which she made a list of 20 things that she wanted to see or do before she passed. One of the items on the list was to redecorate the room that she and Jordan shared together.

I was heartbroken when I heard the story, and wanted to help in anyway that I could. My first meeting with Jordan was very difficult. My heart went out to her - the thought of loosing not only her sister, but her twin. We talked about her room, and looked at ideas of beds and wall colors and new desks. Seeing the room for the first time, it was basically untouched, filled with two twin beds, desks and clothes left on the floor. It was like a moment frozen in time. I knew that, as wonderful as it would be to help makeover the space and give Jordan a new space that she and her sister had always dreamed of, it was going to be a hard challenge to not take away from the memories of the past. These thoughts were constantly on my mind throughout the process. We couldn't just replace everything in the room and forget the past. It was vital to incorporate the memories from the past and start to create new memories for the future.

There were certainly many tears while working on this project, not just for the family, but from me too. Each step along the way had its own layer of consideration. This was the room that the twins had been brought home together from the hospital. This was also the room where Jensen had been sick. These were the beds that they had slept in and the desks that they had worked at. Boxing up the memories for the room to be painted and new furniture to be installed, lead to the family discovering items that Jensen had left behind. Taking apart the twin beds for the new full sized bed to be installed felt like I was somehow breaking the twins apart.

Just last week, we installed the new room, with newly painted purple walls (Jensen’s favorite color) and all new furniture (thanks to PBTeen). Nothing made me happier than to see the joy in Jordan’s face with the re-design of the room. The room was fresh and new and exactly what she and Jensen had talked about. We filled picture frames with photos, moved in stuffed animals and many objects that were important to Jensen. It was vital to keep Jensen’s memory alive the space and the dreams that she had, but at the same time help Jordan move forward.

I was honored to be apart of such a touching transformation. The San Francisco Chronicle documented this process and I am happy to share this article with you.

Shortly after her daughter Jensen died in August, Evelyn Barrett stumbled upon a journal that the 13-year-old had kept. In it, she chronicled her two-year battle with synovial sarcoma, a rare and incurable form of cancer that afflicts hundreds of young people every year.

She wrote about her chemotherapy treatments and many surgeries; about shuttling among hospitals in the Bay Area, Tennessee and Orange County - all via train or car because her lungs were too fragile for air travel. The accomplished piano player, who was also a competitive swimmer and tennis player before her illness, documented her experience as a junior bridesmaid in a cousin's summer wedding; a July trip to Alaska, where she participated in a sled-dog ride with an Iditarod race team; and other family vacations that offered a brief respite from reality.

"Her last entry was a list of 20 things she wanted to see or do before she passed," said Evelyn. One of the items was to redecorate the bedroom she shared with her twin sister, Jordan - to transform it from a little girl's room to a space better suited for a teenager.

"Jordan and Jensen shared a room since the day they came home from the hospital," recalled their mother. "They laughed, fought, cried, studied together, read together, yelled at each other like siblings often do, and learned how to get along with each other in their 10-by-12-foot room. Despite all of this activity, they loved sharing their room and were inseparable."
Evelyn and husband Greg's 9-year-old son, Blake, has his own room. And the family's Saratoga home does have a spare bedroom. But neither twin wanted it; they were roommates by choice.

In the weeks following Jensen's death, her side of the room remained untouched, "as if she was still there - unmade bed, papers on her desk, her clothes on the floor," said Evelyn, who saw a new purpose in completing the bedroom makeover on Jensen's list. "It would be great to give Jordan a fresh start and begin her healing process."

Through mutual friends, interior designer Grant K. Gibson heard about the Barretts and reached out to them to volunteer his services.

"I couldn't imagine what it would be like for a young girl to lose her sister and best friend. Jordan's had to deal with so much," he said. "My goal as a designer is to bring a smile to people's faces when I'm done working on a project. And I hope that I can do that for her."

During their initial meeting, to help provide a sense of her aesthetic, Jordan showed him some pages she had dog-eared in the latest PBteen catalog. Gibson knew that with the lingering medical and funeral bills, the budget was going to be tight. But he also knew that PBteen is headquartered in San Francisco. So he contacted the home furnishings retailer to inquire about merchandise donations.

With PBteen on board, the project officially got under way. "I'm excited to have a new room," said Jordan, who envisioned walls in shades of purple and furnishings in black and white. "Jensen and I had discussed what we wanted to do. Now I'll be able to incorporate some of the ideas that we talked about. I would love a place where I can relax, read, hang out with friends and do homework."

Earlier this month, the painters and furniture installers descended on Jordan's bedroom. Out went the seafoam green walls, pair of twin beds and two desks. In went a full-size bed; a storage tower that is the perfect spot for personal mementos, not to mention a set of "Twilight" books; a bookcase for more academic reading material; and a combination desk and hutch.
Graphic and textural accents - such as the PBteen Nouveau Floral bedding, a wire letter "J" and a lavender flokati rug - imbue a sense of fun.

"It will be easy for her to change the accessories in the room over the years," said Gibson. "Because you know with teenagers, one day it's in, the next it's out."

The room includes some holdovers, of course. A piece of Jordan's old desk, for example, was brought back in. "I started to write on it about a year ago," explained the eighth-grader. "Then when friends came over, they'd sign it." Gibson proposed retaining just the autographed panel of the desk and repurposing it as wall art. It now rests on top of her new desk, behind a trophy that Jordan and Jensen won in a doubles tennis competition.

"It was important for me to keep objects that remind me of Jensen," said Jordan. Among those objects are lots of photographs and Jensen's beloved stuffed animals - like a monkey, Elliot the Elephant and a caterpillar that Jensen received as a newborn.
Caterpillars are a subtle, recurring theme in the room. There's a colorful ceramic caterpillar from a paint-it-yourself studio. Jensen started it, and Jordan finished it last month. A plastic caterpillar holds a small collection of medallions and pendants that were given to Jensen while she was undergoing cancer treatments. "We just found this when we were clearing out the room," said Evelyn. "I had no idea she had saved all of these."

On the day that the finished room was revealed, Jordan invited her friend Camille Tabari to share in the excitement. "I know it was hard to change," said the fellow 13-year-old, "but it looks a lot better now."

Added Jordan: "It looks different from what I thought it was going to, but it's so much better than what I imagined!" In addition to the purple, black and white palette, Gibson introduced pink into the room - a pleasant surprise to Jordan, whose second favorite color is pink.

Her father, Greg, noted that "it's a good step in moving forward. She's growing up and entering the next stage. It's important to keep your memories, but don't let them hold you back."

And now the Barretts can cross this item off of Jensen's list. "This is what she wanted," said Evelyn. "I feel like she's smiling down on us saying, 'Good job, guys.' "
